Socrates, shortly before his death, tells his students that philosophy is essentially the study of death; that is, the exercise of preparation for death, the liberation of the soul from the bonds of the body, the search for truth and goodness that cannot be fully attained as long as the soul is bound to bodily needs.

In other words, the philosopher lives in such a way that he does not fear death, but considers it a natural passage to a purer sphere of being.
