Boxing Pendant in Silver (925) with a leather cord.
This event has been known since the Minoan and the Mycenaean periods. Homer reports boxing as one of the athletic contests that was organized to honor Patroklos. In mythology, Apollo invented boxing but Hercules, Thiseas and other heroes are also credited. However, Apollo was considered the protector of this athletic contest. Boxing was incorporated into the Games in Olympia during the 23rd Olympic Games (688 BC) and for children in 41st (616 BC). Opponents fought until the one of two fell insensible or admitted his defeat. The opponents stood confronted with the left leg straight out front and the right behind and bend. The blows came mainly in the head and the face. There was no time restriction during the fight and the athletes fought until one of them was forced to admit his defeat or fall unconscious. Athletes wore blets around their hands, a fashion already known in the Mycenaean period.
From the 4th century BC until the close of the 2nd century AD, instead of tying up belts, boxers wear a kind of glove from decorated belts. Finally, in Roman times boxers used a boxing glove strengthened with iron and lead. The most famous boxer of antiquity was Diagoras of Rhodes, father of Kallipateira.
