Pentathlon Pendant (PENT_N_002)

Pentathlon is a combination of five events: the long jump, the footrace, the javelin, the discus and wrestling. The first three, were considered to be light events and the last two heavy events. The tradition reports that Jason first created pentathlon in honor of his friend Paleas, who had won the wrestling event but had come second in all other events at the Games that took place among the Argonauts on Limnos island. The long jump, the javelin and the discus were only conducted a part of the pentathlon. The footrace and wrestling were also carried out separately with their own reward. The victor of pentathlon was considered the most important athlete of the Games. Indeed, Aristotle considered him to be “the best of Greeks”. However, it is unknown how the winner of the pentathlon was determined.
